Director Spielberg withdraws from the remake of film ‘Harvey’

After spending the past half year of developing the remake of “Harvey”, award-winning director Steven Spielberg has withdrawn this project in DreamWorks.  Harvey is a film about a man and his six-foot tall invisible rabbit. This exit by Spielberg was confirmed by a spokesman but there was no specific reason mentioned.

The DreamWorks studio had agreed to have finance 50% of production through its new funding relationship with Reliance, and either distribute domestically or internationally through its arrangement with Disney.

Before this news was delivered to Fox 2000, it was reported that Spielberg’s first choice to play the main role was Tom Hanks. However, the said actor, who is often regarded as a modern day Stewart, declined to take this role.  Spielberg and Fox spent several months to court Robert Downey Jr.  The latter didn’t commit but some suggestions on rewrites of Jonathan Tropper’s script. However, they never found themselves in creative sync on the script, and the director finally decided to abandon the film.

This will be a great disappointment for Fox 2000 but Variety says that Fox 2000 will continue working on “Harvey “and re-approach Spielberg and Downey.
